ABOUT ME
A native of Kirkland, I consider the Pacific Northwest to be the most wonderful part of the country! Of course I?m biased, but the moderate temperatures, green landscapes, the ability to go from ocean to snow-covered mountains to eastern Washington desert all in the space of an hour or two... well, it suits me, so I?ll always call this place home.
ARTIST STATEMENT In the White Tree Series I continue my fascination in the integration of loose abstraction and precise detail, resulting in rough landscapes containing highly refined structures of leafless trees. Masa paper proves to be a unique and interesting surface upon which to work; the tree structures are partially formed from white space left in the watercolor underpainting and then augmented by adding many layers of a gouache/acrylic paint mixture. Colored pencil reinforces surface texture and by varying the consistency of overpainting and amount of washes I can achieve a 3-dimensional effect of branches stacked against each other in space. In these pieces I gravitate towards a muted palette dominated by blue/green and heavily influenced by nature, and this supports the general theme of this series. I find that in all my paintings the detail work is very much a meditative process, and striking the balance between rigid structure and spontaneity is reflective of my own personal challenges and is what breathes life into my most successful pieces.
